The Mosman Park Project

— Blending Natural Beauty, Modern Functionality, and Timeless Design

Studio Esar

The Mosman Park project was an exciting opportunity for Studio Esar to create a modern, functional space for a growing family. Silvia from Studio Esar shared that the clients, who own a modular construction company, were seeking more room to grow and adapt to their busy, flexible lifestyle. Given their needs, the decision to add a modular second-storey extension was a natural one. The house had already undergone four previous renovations, presenting the challenge of merging its various incarnations into a cohesive design.

Keen Architecture was brought in to manage the second-storey extension, while Studio Esar updated the kitchen and living areas on the ground floor. This holistic design approach ensured seamless integration between the new upper level and the refreshed lower level, allowing both spaces to flow naturally in style and function.

Initially, Studio Esar had been engaged to select furniture, art, and decorative objects for the home. However, when a freak storm flooded the downstairs area, they were tasked with redesigning key interior elements, including the kitchen and fireplace. This unexpected challenge allowed the team to create a design that balances both function and style.

A central focus of the renovation was texture and materiality. Outdated white high-gloss surfaces and mirrored splashbacks were replaced with a more refined, tactile material palette. Leather-wrapped joinery handles, ceramic pendant lighting, and ribbed textures on the overhead cupboards and breakfast bar added depth and interest to the kitchen, creating a modern, balanced feel.

When selecting materials, the team was drawn to Stone Ambassador’s Ottoman Grey for its striking vein pattern, which mimics the natural beauty of stone. Ottoman Grey offers the aesthetic appeal of marble without the maintenance challenges associated with natural stone. Its subtle veining and soft texture complement the materials used throughout the home. Its low-maintenance qualities also made it ideal for a family home with young children.

Ottoman Grey not only added sophistication but also provided visual interest with its intricate vein pattern. The stone’s marble-inspired look elevated the kitchen, making it a standout feature while blending seamlessly with the overall design.

The kitchen renovation focused on improving functionality as well as aesthetics. The island bench was extended to provide more workspace, while the layout remained open and practical. Integrated appliances further streamlined the design, creating a sleek, uncluttered aesthetic suited to the family’s needs.
